"How to Obtain ISO Certification "

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) maintains a group of standards for quality management systems, known as ISO 9000. Having ISO 9000 certification can be helpful for any business looking to expand globally and to assure the quality of the manufacturing systems. Obtaining an ISO certification takes some time and effort, but can be rewarding for a business to have in its credentials

Make sure the decision to obtain an ISO 9000 certification is made by the person who is in charge of all manufacturing processes in your business. Management should determine whether or not this person should go through with the process of obtaining the certification. Once it is determined that the certification process should be undertaken you can begin to obtain the ISO 9000 certification

Determine the roles for those in management and manufacturing to record all of the procedures, policies and requirements for the systems of your company. Also, job descripttions and functions should be recorded. All process information and documents should be organized before continuing with the certification process

Implement the documentation into your business through training and through step-by-step procedures. A technical writer may be helpful for implementing the documents to your employees. Make sure that the employees know the importance of understanding all process information that has been documented and that they know the importance of obtaining ISO certification

Perform audits internally to make sure all of the employees understand the documentation and successfully follow the procedures. If there are any errors found during the audits, make sure to create corrective actions so there are no recurrences

Apply for certification by contacting an ISO representative (see Resources). A representative may come to your business to observe the procedures in action and to give you a chance to discuss the success of your implementation process

What Is ISO 90001 ?

ISO certification (such as ISO-9000 and ISO-9001) is highly touted in the business media. Many governments have adopted some of the ISO standards, such as those regarding shipping. Many people may recognize ISO-9001 as a type of quality management, but in reality the ISO-9001 quality standard encompasses much more. ISO has certain requirements that must be met for an organization to achieve certification. While these requirements are quite rigid, they do not specify how they are to be obtained. This feature allows for greater flexibility in quality process design, allowing a company to develop solutions that are tailored to its business.

Definition

  • ISO-9001, frequently misnumbered as ISO-90001, is a quality standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization. Also known also ISO-9001: 2008, its most recent version was released in November 2008. By looking at the quality process and product quality manifest in the hardware, software, processed materials and services of a company, ISO-9001 seeks to accurately define the complete processes inherent in each, from input to output to feedback.

    History

  • The first ISO standard was released in 1987. ISO-9001 is the fourth incarnation of the ISO standard. This latest version was released with few revisions, but with the primary objective of clarifying its requirements and improving the consistency of the ISO standard with other quality management standards, both within its family of products and outside it. While many people, remembering only the surge of quality management initiatives spurred on in the mid-1980s, forget that quality has been always been an issue in business, the importance of it was clarified in the British government's slogan of 1966, "Quality is everyone's business." ISO standards  are developed by committees of professionals from a variety of sectors, as well as representatives from government, consumer organizations and various nonprofits, among others

Objectives

  • The primary objective of ISO-9001 is to act as a tool to improve the quality of products, services and operation while proving that quality is important to customers and employees. This may be done to meet certain quality demands by the customer or to maintain or achieve a competitive advantage. Some organizations may even have quality standards that must be met to continue operation.

  • ISO-9001 carries these objectives, but purposely does not define "how" those objectives are to be met. There are certain steps involved in adopting a quality management system, but the particulars are left open, allowing for greater flexibility and diversity.

    Benefits

  • Eight benefits were outlined in ISO-9001, each of which relate to core quality management objectives:

  • 1.) Improved consistency
2.) Enhanced focus on the customer
    3.) More focused leadership
    4.) Employee involvement
    5.) Systematic approac
  • 6.) Continuous improvement
    7.) Decisions based on facts
    8.) Mutually beneficial and relationship

However, there are many other benefits to be had from applying quality standards to operations, according to the British Accreditation Bureau:

1.) Improved internal working leading to less errors and rework

2.) Improved customer satisfaction and loyalty

3.) Improved morale and motivation

4.) Preferential insurance premiums

5.) Competitive advantage

6.) Increased profitability

7.) Enhanced status

Obtaining ISO certification

  • There are several requirements posed by the ISO-9001. While this is not an inclusive list, stated briefly they are:

  • 1.) Develop a quality management system (QMS), meaning the establishment of objectives and the naming of those responsible for meeting those objectives.

  • 2.) Document the QMS, including, but not limited to, documents reflecting the procedures and policies of the QMS, a manual for the QMS, control documents, and a system by which documents are maintained.

  • 3.) Implement the QMS.

  • 4.) Maintain the QMS by reviewing the system through monitoring and measuring feedback loops, observations, management reviews and other metrics.

  • 5.) Improve the QMS.

    ISO Is Voluntary

ISO certification is not mandatory. As noted by the ISO itself, "ISO is a nongovernmental organization and it has no power to enforce the implementation of the standards it develops. A number of ISO standards---mainly those concerned with health, safety or the environment---have been adopted in some countries as part of their regulatory framework, or are referred to in legislation for which they serve as the technical basis. However, such adoptions are sovereign decisions by the regulatory authorities or governments of the countries concerned. ISO itself does not regulate or legislate

What Are the Benefits of ISO Certification

Identification

  • ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is a network of institutions, in 161 countries, that seek to establish standards for quality and requirements of materials, products, processes, the organization of information and management systems, with the idea that any organization can conduct business with any other, in a global market.

    Certification

  • ISO does not legislate or enforce regulations. Technical committees of experts from industry, science, governmental and private organizations work together to develop international standards. Any ISO certification merely ensures that a management system includes all the requirements in processes and information organization.

    ISO 9001

  • ISO 9001 is a quality management system for any organization, ensuring the quality of products, services and documentation. Many industries require contracting companies to be ISO 9001 certified. Some types of contracts for the government, oil industry or medical technologies are dependent on ISO 9001 compliance.

    Small Businesses

  • Small business can benefit from ISO 9001 as it standardizes the way the businesses are run. Processes will be written, documents will be organized and the basic functions will be streamlined, allowing a change of employees or management with fewer detrimental effects to overall operations.

    Focus on Customer Service

  • Part of the ISO 9001 management system, is a standardization for customer service and the way customer requirements are met. Methods for measuring and tracking customer satisfaction are also part of the ISO 9001 system.

    Internal Audits

  • The ISO 9001 system also includes regular internal audits, to identify any nonconformity in procedures or documentation. These internal audits can catch small errors in processes or procedures before they become costly problems. Regular internal audits can also reduce disruptions from outside customer audits

To obtain ISO 9000 certification, specifically ISO 9001 (the standard for quality management systems), an organization must first understand the requirements outlined in the ISO 9001 standard. The process begins by conducting a gap analysis to identify areas where current practices fall short. Next, the organization should implement or align its quality management system (QMS) with the standard’s principles, including customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, and continual improvement. Documentation of processes, employee training, and internal audits are essential steps. Once the QMS is established, the organization must engage an accredited third-party certification body to perform a thorough audit. If the system meets all criteria, the organization is awarded ISO 9001 certification, which typically remains valid for three years with regular surveillance audits to ensure ongoing compliance.
