An imposter posing as a GST inspector was caught in Kanpur on Saturday, June 25, 2023. The man, identified as Mohit Gupta, was found to be carrying fake documents of the Income Tax department. He was arrested by the police on the complaint of a restaurant operator who had suspected him of being an imposter.
Gupta had gone to the restaurant in front of IIT-Kanpur posing as a GST inspector. He had asked the restaurant operator to show him the GST returns and other documents. The restaurant operator became suspicious when Gupta could not answer some basic questions about the GST law. He then called the police, who arrested Gupta.
The police have registered a case against Gupta under the sections of cheating and extortion. He is currently in police custody.
This is not the first time that an imposter has posed as a GST inspector. In recent years, there have been several cases of such impersonations. In some cases, the imposters have even managed to extort money from businesses.
The GST authorities have warned businesses to be careful of imposters posing as GST inspectors. They have advised businesses to only deal with genuine GST inspectors who can produce proper identification documents.
