Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had reached out to Sitharaman seeking the GST exemption for the medication following an appeal by the girl's family. Tharoor, in a tweet, complemented Sitharaman and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) chairman Vivek Johri for the prompt action.

"The family will get their injection, the baby will live, and our exchequer will sacrifice (Rs) 7 lakhs in GST income to bring life and joy to a small child," Tharoor tweeted.

"Whenever I am assailed by doubts about spending so much of my life in politics, something like this happens and makes it all worthwhile," he wrote.
