Your friend is a Salaried employee so , ITR-1 would be the correct return to file.

dont worry his income is below exemption limit  so no need to file any ITR 

only form 16 is sufficient if den also he want to file than see his form 16 if tds deducted than in which section if u/s 192 than ITR 1         OR ITR 2        OTHERWISE ITR 4
