When the Tax Portal Isn't Ready, Who Pays the Price?

334 views 1 replies

It’s already the second week of May, yet the Income Tax Department has still not enabled the e-filing portal for individuals to file their ITRs for the previous financial year — even though the due date remains July 31st. This delay creates a real problem for those who urgently need their ITRs for important tasks. For example, students applying to MBA or other professional courses need proof of income for admissions and financial documents — but they’re stuck because the ITR can’t be filed. With most academic years starting in June or July, there’s very little time left. Many others may need ITRs for loans, visa applications, or job-related verifications. It’s frustrating when you’re willing to comply early but can’t — just because the system isn’t open yet.

  1. Why does the Income Tax Department delay individual e-filing access if the due date remains unchanged?
  2. Shouldn’t there be a mechanism for early filers to access e-filing, especially when ITRs are needed for time-sensitive processes like admissions and visas?
  3. Can the government provide an alternate solution or temporary document for those affected by this delay?

The Income Tax Department's delay in enabling the e-filing portal for individuals to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) can be frustrating, especially for those who need their ITRs for time-sensitive processes like MBA admissions, loan applications, or visa processes.

*Possible Reasons for Delay:* -

*Technical Preparations*: The department might need time to update and test their systems for the new financial year, ensuring a smooth filing process. -

*Administrative Preparations*: They may be finalizing rules, forms, and guidelines for the current financial year, which takes time.

*Mechanism for Early Filers:* - *No Official Statement*: There isn't an official statement on why early access isn't provided, but it's likely due to the department's preparation timeline and ensuring compliance with new regulations.

*Alternate Solutions:* -

*Contact the Income Tax Department*: Reach out to their support or helpline to inquire about the delay and potential alternatives. -

*Temporary Documents*: Unfortunately, there's no provision for temporary documents, but you can ask about possible interim solutions or certificates that might serve your purpose. -

*Condonation Request*: If you miss the deadline due to circumstances beyond your control, you can submit a condonation request via the e-filing portal, explaining the reason for the delay

*Condonation Request Process:* - *Eligibility*: Applicable for late electronic verification or late ITR filing with a valid reason. -

*Time Limit*: You must submit your condonation application within five years from the end of the relevant assessment year. -

*Steps*: - Log in to the e-filing portal. - Go to the dashboard and select "Services" > "Condonation Request." - Choose the reason for delay and upload required documents.³
