When the Tax Portal Isn't Ready, Who Pays the Price?

It’s already the second week of May, yet the Income Tax Department has still not enabled the e-filing portal for individuals to file their ITRs for the previous financial year — even though the due date remains July 31st. This delay creates a real problem for those who urgently need their ITRs for important tasks. For example, students applying to MBA or other professional courses need proof of income for admissions and financial documents — but they’re stuck because the ITR can’t be filed. With most academic years starting in June or July, there’s very little time left. Many others may need ITRs for loans, visa applications, or job-related verifications. It’s frustrating when you’re willing to comply early but can’t — just because the system isn’t open yet.

  1. Why does the Income Tax Department delay individual e-filing access if the due date remains unchanged?
  2. Shouldn’t there be a mechanism for early filers to access e-filing, especially when ITRs are needed for time-sensitive processes like admissions and visas?
  3. Can the government provide an alternate solution or temporary document for those affected by this delay?
