What is prefilled XML download?

Dear Sir/Madam,

When I get a chance to login to new efiling portal it says my profile is only 85% complete and I can not download prefilled X M L.

What exactly is prefilled XML, how important it is and will it be a showstopper if I leave my profile wherever it is?

I have some losses to be carried forward so I will need to file ITR2 again this time. Any clarity will be great.

Thanks and regards,   Rajesh

Quick Summary
Prefilled XML (now often JSON) on the new e-filing portal is a file that automatically populates much of your Income Tax Return (ITR) form with your existing data. To download this, you usually need to ensure your profile is fully complete, often indicated as 100%. Issues like missing country details in the PAN database can prevent profile completion. While XML was used previously, the current format is typically JSON, and utilities exist to help generate these files.

You need to update your profile in order to download the pre-filled X M L. Pre-filled X M L is handy when you file your ITR because this X M L would fill most of the data in the ITR form.

Thanks for your post.

I find prefilled J S O N file. There's no X M L . Also I suppose X M L was applicable up to previous year when it would be generated from within excel sheet.

I am surprised to find that when 85% profile is complete, system does not indicate what is 15% missing !!To my best understanding I have filled everything. The interesting part is PAN database does not have India and country is mandatory field, so even after copying address from PAN it shouts that address does not match because India is missing in PAN database!

For FY 2020-21, there is no XL format, only JSON format

Format may soon be released
