PING STANDS FOR PERSONAL INTERNET GROPHER WHICH SHOWS & GIVES REPLY TO YOU THAT WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR INTERNET CONNECTION OR NOT. JUST ASK UR PROVIDER. HE WILL GIVE U 3 PINGS. ONE SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR MODEM. 2ND SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR LOCAL EXCHANGE CARRIER & 3 RD SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO MAIN SERVER OF UR ISP I.E. Options:
-t Pings the specified host until stopped.

To see statistics and continue - type Control-Break;

To stop - type Control-C.

-a Resolve addresses to hostnames.

-n count Number of echo requests to send.

-l size Send buffer size.

-f Set Don't Fragment flag in packet.

-i TTL Time To Live.

-v TOS Type Of Service.

-r count Record route for count hops.

-s count Timestamp for count hops.

-j host-list Loose source route along host-list.

-k host-list Strict source route along host-list.

-w timeout Timeout in milliseconds to wait for each
reply.

PING is used to know whether the computers in the network are connected properly or not for data transfer.

example: Suppose there is some error in transfer of data from one system to other in a LAN(say). Then you check using a PING command. If there is no reply, then there is a problem in network connection else error is somewhere else.
