Sweta, we are vegetarians because we were born in a family of Vegetarians. We were ingrained from birth that eating flesh of some animal is unethical. Those who justify eating meat, love the taste of flesh. They say that vegetarian diet is not as tasty as a non-veg diet and vegan diet is just ‘ghass-foos’. Since, they don’t want to forego the sense of taste, they justify their eating of meat (Khane walo ko khane ka bahana chahiye). Since they were born in a family of non-vegetarians, they were ingrained from birth that eating flesh is quite normal and hence trying to explain them is quite difficult.
Those people who are staunch Vegetarians are less aggressive and generally peaceful as compared to those who like a Non-Veg diet. Thus, the decision to eat Veg or Non-Veg is based entirely upon one’s temperament. I know one Practising Muslim electrician, who does electric job for us. This man is very peaceful and merciful towards others. Though his parents were Non-Vegetarians, he remained a Vegetarian from birth. I also know one Maharashtrian college friend, whose father runs a butchery. This boy is very peaceful and kind by nature. Although all in his family are Non-Veg, he is an only Vegan in his house. Thus, eating decision depends upon one’s temperament and not entirely on religion.
Six months ago, I wrote an essay on Vegetarianism (You had read it and thanked), a Muslim man aggressively and rudely replied that, I am a fool and brainless because I don’t understand that even plants have life.
I gave him following reply :
“The ideal of Hinduism is to choose the path of least violence and compassion towards every living entity. There is a difference between taking a life of a living entity with higher consciousneess and one with lower consciousness. Taking life of a living entity with lower consciousness such as plants, is less sinful whereas taking the life of a living entity with higher consciousness such as human beings and animals, is more sinful. If we can survive on vegetables and fruits, there is no need to create unnecessary violence by eating carcasses of animals.
Further, the sin incurred by killing plants can be washed away by eating the food offered to the Supreme Lord, Krishna, because such food becomes consecrated by the holy association of Supreme Lord. Whereas, if meat is offered to the Supreme Lord, it would still be very sinful to eat, as Krishna would never consecrate such food.
A person who desires spiritual elevation is advised in Hinduism to forego eating meat and other abhakshya (forbidden food). Further, a person can never attain true bliss by eating meat. Such talks can be appreciated only by those who are intrinsically non-violent and have compassion towards other living entities.”
Just try to reason it in this way and also try to explain them the pain of creatures slaughtered in abattoirs.
