US Homeland Security chief doubts feasibility of 100 pc box scanning

Ms Janet Napolitano, US Homeland Security head, has expressed doubts that obligatory 100 per cent scanning of all container exports to the US at overseas ports can work given the present state of technology.

She told a press conference that her department was analysing an alternate system involving scanning, information analysis, risk analysis and physical checking, which is what is done today.

The US government still requires 100 per cent scanning by 2014, and all overseas ports have been gearing up for it.
