Hi Members,
My brother has received a notice from the incoime tax dept stating non-filing of returns. His annual income in the year 2010-11 did not exceed 2 lacs (was around 1.8 lacs). At present TDS is being deducted from his salary as it is above the exemption limit.My parents had made an investment in UTI in his name (way back in the 80's) and these units were redeemed in 2009,he received 20,000 Rs in his account.
My doubt is has he received the letter because including 20,000 Rs his annual income went above 2 lacs?
Also my father was an NRI. He has retired from work in 2010.
Please advise what should be done! My brother has to reply back to that letter within 10 days with a reasonable explanation..
