Tax implication on advanced retention bonus

I recently got an advanced retention bonus of lets say 15 lakhs and the retention period for that amount is 2 years.

I have a question lets say the retention bonus was given in sept 2021 and the period will complete in sept 2023, if I leave the company before that time period, i'll have to pay the retention bonus on pro rata basis, table for which is given below and retention bonus was given after deducting the tax.

What I wanted to know is If I leave my organisation on April 2022, I'll have to pay 1125000 rs, but tax was already deducted in the last financial year, so how will the tax be calculated.

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses the tax implications of receiving an advanced retention bonus. If you leave your company before the retention period ends, you'll likely have to repay a pro-rata amount of the bonus. The key question is how the tax already paid on the full bonus amount is handled when you have to repay part of it. The content clarifies that retention bonuses are taxable income, subject to a flat rate, and generally don't qualify for deductions or the basic exemption limit.

You have to pay tax on 15 lakhs irrespective of paying it back to the company.

While a retention bonus is not considered part of an employee's salary, it is still considered income and part of total gross pay and hence it must be reported as income on your yearly taxes. No deduction under section 80C or 80D or any other deduction or allowance is allowed from such an income. The benefit of basic exemption limit and income tax slabs are also not applicable to this income. The entire amount received will be taxable at a flat rate of 31.2%.
