Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies how interest paid on a joint home loan can be claimed as a tax deduction under Section 24b of the Income Tax Act. While the deduction is capped at the actual interest paid or Rs. 2 lakhs per person, the claim must be in proportion to the ownership of the property. Therefore, a husband and wife cannot arbitrarily divide the interest to maximise one person's tax benefit beyond their actual payment or ownership share.

Person can claim interest only that much amount that he has paid but not more than 2lakh under sec24
Husband and wife each paid interest of 120000 each
can husband claim 170000 and wife claim 70000 rather than claiming 120000 each
No, you can't claim more intetest
No you can't
Interest paid is taken as deduction in the ratio of ownership of property, subject to maximum of actual amt paid or Rs 2 lakhs.
