After completion of tenure as Small shareholder director, such director shall not be appointed or be associated with such company in any other capacity directly or indirectly for period of 3 yrs.

In my opinion there is no such restriction provided u/s 161 for appointment of a ssd except that the additional director should not be a person who has been lost in resolution for appointment of a director. So in my opinion atleast a ssd can be appointed as an additional director.
