The managing director is the signatory of Income Tax return as per IT Act. accordingly he is supposed to attend hearing before tax authorities. However due to lack of time , he wants to authorize me to represent, attend case before income tax authorities.

my question is - should authorization letter should be duly executed in required stamp paper / or stamped?

or simple authorisation letter mentioning me as employee of the company is legally valid and acceptable

No no required stamp paper
Yes power of attorney is required to be executed on 500/- Rs stamp paper in Maharashtra. it should be duly notarized with registration details.

Letter of authorizatiom may not be stamped but true copy of POA must be attached alongwith.

Representation before the tax authorities need to be on stamp paper (value depends on state) be it  a chartered accountant or an employee. Formal authorisation in letter head will not be accepted.

Power of attorney (duly executed on stamp paper) in favour of employee is sufficient to represent before tax authorities.
