Service tax exemption

I am a freelancer, giving coaching / training to people in organisations. I don't have any office or assistants. Am I exmpted from Service Tax ?

No sir you are not at all exempted. However if in previous year your 'aggregate value of taxable services' did not exceeded 10 Lakhs then you are not required to pay service on first 10 Lakhs in the current year. This is the only exemption available to you.

As said by Ruben. You are not exempt.

Dear Sir,

With effect from 1st July 2012, Service tax has been levieable on comprehensive approach, i.e. Negative list  of services has been implemented. It means only those services are exempt which are in negative list. and freelancing service is not included in negative list. So you are not exempted from service tax.

However you are save from service tax liability until your receipt is upto Rs.9 lac. After that you are liable to get registered under Service tax.
