First of all check the status of your cancellation of registration, If the cancellation of registration is under pending for processing please wait for some more days.
Meantime you can file nil returns for the subsequent month.

It was my personal opinion that you have to file nil returns for succeeding month because to avoid late fee if it arises. Not sure about it.
