Query regarding Law & Audit

In subjects such as Law and Audit, it is said quoting section though not necessary, is very much desirable...my question is that incase i know the relevant section but cant recall the precise subsection..should i still quote just the section no. or should i desist from quoting the section no at all?? Can this go against my favor?
