PPF Interest Exempt - But what drop down to choose?

587 views 5 replies

Respected Sir/Madam,

Earlier I would just show PPF Interest as Other Exempt income. But now in this ITR  I am confused what options to choose from the two drop downs .

Now if I choose Other Income the sub-options are

  • 10(2) Member share from HUF
  • 10(16) Scholership
  • Exempt as per CBDT Circular
  • As per CBDT Notifications
  • Receipts not in nature of income

Can you please guide me what options to choose here?

Thanks

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses confusion regarding how to report exempt PPF interest in the Income Tax Return (ITR). Previously reported as 'Other Exempt Income', taxpayers are now unsure which specific dropdown option to choose in newer ITR forms. The consensus suggests reporting PPF interest under 'Any Other' or 'Other Income' in Schedule EI, clearly specifying 'PPF interest u/s 10(11)' as the nature of income. It's crucial to ensure the reported amount matches your AIS and Form 26AS to prevent automated scrutiny.

EXEMPT U/S  10(11) .

I did ask same question here.

PPF Interest Reporting in ITR-1 AY 2026-27 | Schedule EI Section 10(11) vs 10(12)

From many years I am using ITR2, Schedule EI -> Other Exempt Income

Choose Add and from Nature of Income Dropdown -> Any Other or Other Income,

It will add one blank field, Wwrite "PPF INTEREST" in blank field and enter the PPF interest amount credited to the PPF account on 31 Mar in the next field

PPF interest is exempt under Section 10(11) of the Income Tax Act. In Schedule EI (Exempt Income) of your ITR:
- ITR-1: no dedicated PPF row; report under "Any other" with descripttion "PPF interest u/s 10(11)"
- ITR-2: dedicated row "Interest from PPF account" exists in Schedule EI - use that

Amount must match what the bank/post office shows in your AIS and Form 26AS. AIS now captures PPF interest inflows; a mismatch flags the return for automated scrutiny. If your PPF amount is partly for contribution to spouse or minor's account, only your own account's interest is exempt under 10(11) - spouse/minor accounts follow their own exemption.
