Penalties for non-filing of GST

My situation

I had registered for a GST number in March 2018 for my sole proprietorship. Unfortunately, my earlier venture did not take off and I realized I took the GST number a little too early. For over two years (From March 2018 till now) I have not done any kind of filing on the GST portal. Quite embarrassingly, I was clueless about all things GST-related.

Worse, I did not have any real income during this period (I was laid off at my salaried job around the same time I took the GST number).

My Question

I now realize there are penalties and I will not be able to file for future months (I am finally going to launch my business on July 1st, 2020). How can I clear the mess and start on a fresh slate? How big a fine do I have to pay for the period from March 2018 till June 2020? Any help from the kind experts would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you are registered as Regular and if there is no work in your firm then your all penalty will be waived as per GST council 40, otherwise 500/- for each month will be leviex in which you are liable to pay tax
Any notification regarding penalty for non filing of return i.e 500 per return

That was just for the period during pandemic that too for who files return prior to sept.

It's late fee for for non filing not a penalty. Both are different

See you need to file nil returns for the period if you have no transaction during that period .

Just take a note you will be requried to pay gst on any other  receipts too (say rent etc.)

Engage a professional CA for clearing these  mess. Otherwise even after paying a good sum interest and penalty you will fall in issue for these items as you wanna start a new business
