Pan showing wrong jurisdiction

Recently one of my friends applied for a PAN he has filed all the details correct but after receiving the PAN when he filed the ITR he got to know that his Jurisdiction was showing in Nanital though he stays in Delhi and the PAN was also received on his Delhi address only.

Now what is the remedy, he has filed the ITR with wrong Ward which is due to the mistake of NSDL.

No action required. You can file return from anywhere in India. Need not do anything. Dont revise.

Hi, I agree with Sumit kumar, There is no any impact on IT return. you can reach to Income tax offier near to your area to chage ward details.

No. Ignore jurisdiction at your peril. If you happen to get any issues with ITR any time, CPC will redirect it to your jurisdiction officer. You will then have to go to that location to fix any future issues.

I stay in Kerala and my jurisdiction is wrongly assigned to Chennai. I have incorrect outstanding demand tax. To fix it, I am asked to visit officer in Chennai location !!

Exactly kiran..see if you are now staying in kerela but when you made yur pan card, you were in chennai, so now yu will have to go to chennai. But you filed your return in kerela. so if I go by jurisdictial officer, I cannt move around in the country. My pan card should not bound me to a location. as for notice from ITD, they send it by e-mail (CPC) and a request can always be made to transfer case from one officer to another.

Dear Shashank, You can lodge complaint with NSDL and request them to correct the discrepancy, which would unnecessarily linger on. In my opinion, I would suggest you to get the PAN data corrected by submitting Form 49A (Request For New PAN Card Or/ And Changes In PAN Data), which is as good as making a new PAN card but with the same PAN. So long as you are efiling your returns, there might be no problem. But, when there is problem and you are asked to appear before your Assessing Officer, then you have to visit Nainital. It is therefore better to get the PAN Data correctted in PAN Database of the IT Dept. @ Seeyem It appears PAN data is not the only basis on which jurisdiction is defined. My permanent address is in Kerala and I took PAN card from Kerala itself. But, I had once paper filed IT return from Chennai and hence my current jurisdiction is Chennai. So, I am not sure if a PAN correction( in my case nothing to change at all ) alone will help.

@ Sumit Kumar - update after 2 years - Regardig requests about transferring case from one AO to another, you should be really LUCKY. I had filed requests for transferring of case from Chennai to Kerala, once in 2014 and then in 2015, both through my CA. It didn't succeed. My jurisdiction is still in Chennai.

That is how IT dept works, they do not easily transfer jurisdiction from one AO to other. As mentioned by other learned member one should be lucky to get it transferred. IT dept is not mandated by CBDT to do all correspondence through email only and face to face interaction is avoided or reduced to tackle such problem, it is a good step but one has to see how practical it would be. Recently one of my friends got a call from AO stating that he needs some more documents which he sent but still he desires -- repeat - he desires that he may visit his office for face to face interaction .. which he explained difficulty as distance between jurisdiction (delhi) and place of stay (Hyderabad) is very far.. AO further advised he can do so through his friends who may be in delhi.

Dear Sir, I was not able to understand the reply well. Two queries

Which application contained the jurisdiction code ? Did you mean the PAN card application ?
Which centre are you meaning here ? I had submitted PAN application online.

simply file form 49A with NSDL site under PAN data correction, with present address details, and correct AO details, remit fees, send documents , and you will get a new pan card with same number, but with correct AO juridiction.

Dear efiler, These are very helpful replies. Till now I was searching in dark on how this AO details got wrong. On receiving IT notice, in 2014, I went to CA, who took Rs.3500 for correcting AO and for correcting the wrong demand. He told, he was going to write some letter to some one. Both issues remained unresolved till date. This site and earlier details by you are real life saver.

Dear U S Sharma, Thanks for the helpful reply regarding AO correction. But, it appears we cannot do this with online website. We have the option for entering AO only for a new PAN card application. If we try, PAN correction or reprint of PAN card, we don't get the option to enter the AO details. I assume I cannot apply for a new PAN card as that will give a completely different PAN number.
