If "R" is the initial, then donot quote initials, as it is prohibited.You should give your father's name in the relevant place provided, so it gets counted in place of initials.
Some Times, In PAN Application the Identity proof will not match with the documents attached. All you have to see is as foloows.
1. In document if your name is R. Gopal. Fill the form with expansion for "R".
2. Usually in Southern part of India and may be rest of the places, the Initials of father's name will differ from initial of applicant's name. Let say father's name is "Appavu Chellaswamy" and applicant's name is "Chellaswamy Venkat". In this case surname in application should be same for both.

first Name:- Venkat
IT IS ONLY THE PERSON WHOSE NAME IS THAT CAN TELL THAT WHAT IS THE COMPOSITION OF HIS/HER NAME. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOUR NAME'S BEGINNING, END AND MIDDLE , KINDLY REFER TO YOUR MATRIC CERTIFICATE.
