Virtual DJ

VirtualDJ is the DJ software chosen by DJ brands such as Numark, Denon and Hercules. It is used around the world by bedroom DJs and professional superstars alike. With its cutting-edge beatlock engine, your songs will always stay on the beat, and you can work your mixes incredibly faster than any other DJ. The automatic seamless loop engine and synchronized sampler will let you perform astounding remixes on the fly. The video engine lets you mix and scratch music videos as easily as audio. With NetSearch and MusicGroups, you will stay on the edge of the musical trends. And with the versatile VDJScript language and hundreds of available skins, you can tailor your software to your exact needs. Version 6.0.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, and bug fixes.

With effects, samples, and transitions that rival vinyl turntablisms, Virtual DJ lets anyone produce polished MP3 mixes.

At the top of the graphically-intense interface, song-structure visualizations show the beats as the music plays. Two simulated turntables play the currently- loaded tracks. Windows below the turntables show samples, effects, music search, recording, program options, and an Explorer-style interface for loading music. You'll need to download an MP3 encoder if you don't want to record files in WAV format.

Virtual DJ not only can create audio collages, but it now also can make montages of video clips. The stylish interface and high number of features score points, but learning how to use the program is a hit-or-miss proposition. Fortunately, the program offers a thorough user guide. Virtual DJ is well worth a look both for aspiring mixers and newbies.

PowerISO

PowerISO is a powerful CD/DVD image file processing tool, which allows you to open, extract, create, edit, burn, compress, encrypt, split and convert ISO files, and mount these files with internal virtual drive. It can process almost all CD-ROM image files including ISO and BIN. PowerISO can be used easily, which support shell integration, context menu, drag and drop, clipboard copy paste. Version 4.4 supports unicode names and improved burning.

This muscular disc-imaging utility is not kidding around (though we thought the demo might be). PowerISO lets you mount virtual drives, create bootable discs, and generate CD and floppy images. It supports a huge number of image formats, including standard ISO and IMG files as well as files created by almost all popular disc-burning programs such as Nero, CloneCD, and Alcohol120%.

Our one major caveat is that the trial version doesn't let you create images larger than 300MB (most CDs hold 700MB), making it much harder to fully test the product. On the other hand, the trial period is unlimited, so some users may actually prefer this arrangement. Trial restrictions aside, we think PowerISO makes a good pick for intermediate to advanced users.

RealPlayer

RealPlayer 11 is the perfect media player for audio, video, and flash. With it, you can rip, mix, and burn CDs and MP3s fast. It plays all major audio and video formats, so you can build your own playlists and video libraries. And RealPlayer 11 lets you download your favorite videos from thousands of sites and watch them anytime, anywhere you want.

One of the dinosaurs of media playback, RealPlayer has been on the scene since 1995. Sometimes it feels like it hasn't been updated since then, no matter what the version number says. Still, RealPlayer 11 beta introduces a major new function and takes care of some frustrating bugs, making it respectable once again.

The player runs smoother than ever, which to some might not be saying much, but if you haven't used it in years, the differences are dramatic. Now the free version of the player has the ability to download videos from the Internet, including Flash-based videos like those on YouTube. Once installed, mousing over an embedded video will provide a pop-up that not only lets you download the vid, but also change its name, the save-to directory, and other options.

The update sees a major face-lift, as well, removing much of the clutter from the downloadable music store. Though not groundbreaking, the RealPlayer music store gets a thumbs up for being easy to use and offering a flexible DRM policy. The new jukebox features let you make playlists, rip CDs, burn custom mixes, and listen to hundreds of online radio stations. The program still suffers from an intrusive installation, but file-type hijacking and upgrade harassment are mostly gone.

The positive steps begun with Version 10 continue, and users of earlier versions should upgrade.

JetAudio Basic

JetAudio is integrated multimedia software made up of a single compact rack. Not only does it play various music and video files, it also has features such as CD burning, recording, and conversion to other file formats. You can create your own Internet broadcast by using JetCast, provided with JetAudio, and you can play all major file formats, including WAV, MP3, MP3Pro, OGG, WMA, MPEG, AVI, WMV, MIDI, RM, and video and audio CD tracks. Convert among audio file formats, and record analog audio to various formats tag editing for MP3, OGG, and WMA files; sound effects including wide, reverb, and x-bass; multichannel sound output; speed control of audio playback; cross-fading for a smooth transition between two songs; a skinnable user interface; and synchronized lyrics display (karaoke) for MIDI and MP3 files.supports for video conversion for iAUDIO U3, supports ts,tp file extension, and includes video format converter to AVI.

During installation, you have to be careful if you don't want to set JetAudio Basic as the default application for audio and video files. However, the freeware application gives you plenty of reasons to make it your only player.

The interface has a modern design that looks like an equalizer. You can customize each section of the program, from CD ripping to format conversion, to your heart's content. The program can convert files among some a number of formats, as well as read and edit MP3 tags. The built-in Cross-fader, Reverb, and Wide-sound modes provide a nice touch not found in most MP3 players. The program becomes truly unique with its clock, however, which features a timer and an alarm. We also appreciate the inclusion of a tool for seeking out song lyrics.

Our only quibble is it treats a playlist as an album but uses the artist as its primary key field, making it difficult to locate mixes. JetAudio Basic's appealing product set should attract audiophiles.

UltraISO Premium

UltraISO can extract, create, edit, and convert CD/DVD image files. It can directly edit an ISO file, make ISO images from CD/DVD-ROMs, create a new ISO from files and folders on your computer, and make bootable CDs and DVDs. In addition, UltraISO can convert nearly all known CD and DVD image formats to ISO, BIN/CUE, Nero (NRG), Alcohol 120% (MDS/MDF), and CloneCD (CCD/IMG/SUB) formats, as well as burn CD/DVD images directly with built-in burning engine and emulate ISO images with up to 8 virtual CD/DVD drives.

Version 9.3.3.2685 can view and extract files from XBOX360 ISO images, mount UDF DVD images on Windows Vista and Windows 7 Beta 1, and save newly detected media capacity.

Highly versatile and especially proficient with boot discs, UltraISO Premium creates, edits, and burns disc images in several popular formats: ISO, BIN, Nero, Alcohol, CloneCD, and Xbox. It also converts images among formats. UltraISO supports data and audio/video discs and includes a simple MP3 encoder, but it really excels at creating bootable discs. It even can create a disc with a menu for booting several OSs.

The interface is well organized, though rather plain, and we wish its icons were more readable. Also on the negative side, the program can't mount CD images, which will diminish its value for some. However, if you need support for multiple image formats and want to design bootable discs, UltraISO makes a very good pick.

Easy CD-DA Extractor

Easy CD-DA Extractor, the Swiss Army Knife of Digital Audio is all-in-one music converter that rips Audio CDs, converts audio files, edits metadata of audio files and burns Audio CDs, MP3 CDs and DVDs, and Data CDs and DVDs. This Unicode-enabled program has three modules which each has its own purpose: Audio CD Ripper includes AccurateCDDA(tm) ripping engine for reliable CD ripping. Bypasses audio CD copy-protections, gets metadata automatically from Internet disc databases, supports CD-Text, and includes digital audio processing. Audio Converter converts audio files and edits metadata of audio files. CD/DVD Creator burns and copies CDs and DVDs. Supports CD-Text and long filenames (UDF and ISO/Joliet). Supports all popular audio file formats such as MP3, M4A, WMA, AAC, aacPlus, Apple Lossless, FLAC and many others. One-time licensing fee includes free lifetime upgrades.

Version 12.0.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

For ripping audio CDs, burning CDs and DVDs, and converting tracks, Easy CD-DA Extractor excels. Besides rolling in support for Apple Lossless, the latest update focuses on back-end changes that should improve the audio quality and make the program faster.

A well-organized interface displays all of the major features and settings. Four tabs across the top access the Audio CD Ripper, the Audio File Format Converter, Audio CD Creator, and MP3/WMA CD Creator. Ripping CDs is simple: Insert a disc and the Audio CD Ripper window displays info such as artist, track list, year, track length, and album length. The destination folder, the quality and format of output tracks, and even the filename format are all easily edited.

MP3 settings include the ability to choose constant, average, or variable bit rates. The Audio File Format Converter window features a drag-and-drop file selection topped by a conversion-format window. The program supports a large list of lossy and lossless formats including MP3, OGG, WMA, APE, FLAC, AAC, and 3GP. The Audio CD Creator window lets you drop files into that screen, choose the recording speed, and toggle the test feature. The MP3/WMA CD Creator window works similarly and adds much-needed support for data discs.

Easy CD-DA Extractor is easy to learn, quick to use, and loaded with features. It stands tall among the teeming mass of CD-ripping/music-conversion apps.

FreeRip MP3

FreeRip is an easy to use application that can convert from audio CD to MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV and WMA. It also is a MP3 converter, and it can convert MP3 to WAV, OGG to MP3, WMA to MP3, WAV to FLAC, and so on.

FreeRIP also is a MP3 tagger, supports CD-Text and online CD database (FreeRIP CD DB and freedb.org). Moreover FreeRIP includes a search shortcut menu, to help you find images, videos, information and lyrics about CD/track artist or song. Version 3.1 fixed a clipping problem in Ogg Vorbis reader, updated LAME and FLAC libraries.

Like a finely tuned laser, FreeRip 3 does one task: extract songs from your CDs. Fortunately, the app accomplishes its goals accurately, if not with flair, and makes for an easy-to-use audio-track ripper.

The latest version of the program features some long overdue enhancements. Chief among them is the inclusion of the WMA format, and it's hard to believe it wasn't included before. FreeRip also supports WAV, MP3, Vorbis, and FLAC. Other features include multitrack ripping and an option to use the program as an audio-file converter. The options menu is extensive and will appeal to any advanced user, since it makes most manners of customization a cinch.

The interface is well done, with big icons and a friendly main window split into two sections. The left pane lists the tracks, and the right gives you specific info on each song and has a tab to switch to CD-wide info. The toolbar has icons for all the major functions of the app as well as links to the publisher's community pages. In the end, FreeRip doesn't do anything its competitors don't, but it functions well, is uncomplicated and quick, and has no price tag.

Burn4Free CD and DVD

Burn4Free CD and DVD is a burning solution that's compatible with more than 3,000 DVD, BLU RAY and CD burners. Burn data and audio from different file types (WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, FLAC, WavPack, and CDA). Burn and save ISO files, open and save your project to disk, verify content, print compilations, copy DVD, copy BLU RAY and import your audio compilation from M3U and ASX playlists. The drives supported include dual-layer DVD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM (SCSI, IDE, EIDE, and USB 1.0 and 2.0).

Version 4.7 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

This CD and DVD burner works as advertised, but the bundled toolbar it installs reduces its appeal. Burn4Free CD & DVD lets you burn audio discs or write data to CDs and DVDs by dropping audio or data files into the main window.

The button-heavy main window has a somewhat awkward look, but it's easy enough to understand. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the multitude of controls, you can switch to the more streamlined Easy mode. Be aware that the app attempts to install the NavExcel toolbar, which changes the way IE behaves when you mistype a URL or enter one of NavExcel's recognized keywords into the address bar.

Budget-minded users may not care, but even they have plenty of other cheap and free options. We'd prefer to burn discs with our jukebox of choice or pay for a more full-featured, less invasive application.
