Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a change in the taxation of buybacks to address improper use. The government will tax buybacks for all types of shareholders as capital gains.

The government is to disincentivise misuse of tax arbitrage, and promoters are to pay additional buyback tax

Effective tax on corporate promoters to be 22%; non-corporate promoters to have tax of 30% on buybacks. #FM
