1. I have been hearing that once you register for final CA after IPCC, the registration is only valid for 5 yrs.
is it true?
2. for instance if I registered in Mar-15 , my registration shall lapse in Mar-20 and I'm reqd to re-register if I desire to give may-2020.

Yes, you may have to apply for revalidation. check from ssp portal.
What are the consequence of not re registering? coz know of ppl who have surpassed 6 yrs and still have not re registered.

For giving the exam, you have to be registered, and hence re registration is necessary.
