Quality of answers and not the quantity is what matters.
You may also come across circumstances when a question is asked for 5 marks and the same is asked for 16 marks in some other attempt (used to happen in our times, dont know whether the same happens now)
When you get a question for say 8-10 marks and you feel the answer cannot be too long, then just write what is required. Be careful not to beat around the bush ( a practice widely adopted in undergraduate examinations). Write to the point answers. Rather give examples if possible.
