Quick Summary
When filing your Income Tax Return (ITR-1) and needing to claim TDS deducted on a deceased person's PAN, you cannot directly input these details into your own return. The correct procedure involves filing a separate return for the deceased as their Legal Representative. This ensures any refund or tax credit is correctly processed for the deceased's estate.

  • Should you just fill the TDS details from the certificate? No. You cannot directly inject TDS deducted on a deceased person's PAN into your own personal ITR-1.

  • Correct Approach: File a separate return for the deceased person in the capacity of a Legal Representative after registering on the e-filing portal. Any resulting refund or tax credit belongs to the deceased's estate/legal successor via that specific filing channel rather than a direct copy-paste into an individual's personal ITR.

income and tds for the income after the date od death

The relationship field in Schedule TDS was removed from the online ITR utility for AY 2026-27. CBDT revised the TDS schedule in the new forms.

FOR AY 2026-27 IN THE ONLINE UTILITY:
Schedule TDS now requires: TAN of deductor, name, section under which TDS was deducted, amount credited or received, and TDS claimed. The earlier relationship dropdown has been replaced by the Nature of Payment section in most form types.

IF YOU ARE USING THE EXCEL UTILITY:
Make sure you have the latest version. Earlier Excel utilities (v1.0 and v1.1) had display issues with certain columns. Download the latest version from incometax.gov.in using the Download tab after logging in with your credentials.

IF THE PRE-FILLED DATA IS NOT SHOWING CORRECTLY:
Sometimes AIS-sourced TDS entries do not populate all fields in the pre-fill. You can manually add the TDS entry and select the nature from the dropdown: Salary, Interest, Commission, Rent, or Other as applicable.

The TDS reporting in ITR is covered step by step in this [ITR filing guide for salaried employees AY 2026-27](https://taxgarden.in/blog/itr-filing-salaried-employees-2026-2027) including Schedule TDS entry for different income types.
