IDEAS IN STAYING FOCUSED

 

  • Keep regular hours: If every day you study at the same place and during the same hours it would form a habit and this would help you settle down faster. Make some place of the house your study corner.
  • Cut external noise: With music and television on, concentration can be distracting. Please stay away from them. When your study it should be a distraction free environment.
  • Make smart goals:  Start with your ultimate goal and work backwards to identify the various tasks that will help you achieve the goal. Do only those tasks and put the rest in cold storage.
  • Keep a stress list:  No one is stress free. But the smart ones are those who overcome it. If something is constantly bothering you, write it down. It will give you some relief.
  • Come back fast: When your concentration wavers give yourself a break. But get back to the job fast.
  • Put up a signboard: Your concentration could also waver because your friends come and go. It would be a good idea to put up a “DO NOT DISTURB” signboard outside your study room.
  • Keep study room natty: A clean surrounding, a comfortable chair and roper lighting help.
  • Take care: Sleep well. Take short breaks after each hour of study. The time you spend on studying is half wasted if you are not adequately rested. Eat good food, not junk stuff. Exercise. It keeps you alert, physically and mentally.

MAKE LEARNING MORE ENJOYABLE

  • Be interested: Enjoy what you’re learning. When you study because you enjoy it, your learning is deeper and longer lasting.
  • Relate learning to life: When there is a direct connection between classroom learning and your practical experience, your understanding is faster.
  • Try to comprehend: When you try to understand something, it stimulates your thinking ability and your memory. Rote learning no substitute for comprehension.
  • Concentrate: Concentration is at the very heart earning. This can be learnt. Start with brief periods of study and then lengthen them incrementally.
  • Paraphrase: Paraphrasing reduces information into smaller manageable chunks, which are easier to remember. Good note takers exploit this principle by not taking notes verbatim.
  • Visualize: Vivid images last. Therefore visualize material where possible. Mnemonic experts use this technique.
  • Review: Within 24 hours we can forget up to 80% of what we studied. By doing a brief review after a study session, then again a day, a week, a month and even 6months later, we vastly improve our recall, raising it to near 100%.

 

 

Conserve energy: Do not acquire more stress. Do not spend it on futile arguments with bus conductors or auto drivers, or with unreasonable people at work or at home. You can change the world, but first equip yourself.
