Import Duty on Cell phones

Dear Friends,

please help me for the following situation:

Suppose a person goes abroad and buys a Cell phone for personal usage and brings it to India.Then is some tax applicable?

If yes ,what is the percentage?

and is there any way to get exemption from said tax?

Hello Sir,

The HS Code is 85171290(Courtesy cybex.com). I have won a bid on a cellphone on ebay.com and it is in US.The phone is used and i am taking it for personal use.Please help me out what will be the custom duty on it and any other hassles involved in the process.Also indicate if i have to present a declaration saying this is for personal use etc. to the custom officials?Using the custom calculator on cybex.com it says no tax payable.Help me out sooon sir.Thank you.

Passengers above 10 yrs of age staying abroad for more than 3 days.......are eligible for exemption of duty on .....

1)Used personal effects of any amount.....

2)Articles other than those mentioned in Annex 1, upto a value of Rs. 25000 as General Free Allowance if carried on the person or accompanied in the baggage of passenger.......

i guess the value of gfa is revised but i suggest to confirm about it......

Thank you for the info.However i am not a passenger,i am residing in India and want to import the phone for personal use.Atleast could you tell me the exact official to contact.
