IELTS EXAM FALLACY

553 views 1 replies

Hi,

I found out that IELTS General exam is a fallacy and they are pilfering students marks and squeezing money out.

This is how it is:

Written exam- this exam needs special writing skills like, a student cannot repeat the same word (nouns, verbs and adjectives)  or else the marks will reduce. This is not printed in the authentic handbook guidelines which they give when anyone books an exam. Since the students are unaware of this, they do the same mistake and their marks automatically reduce. Why is this kept a secret? When special writing skills are required for the exam, authentic information must be provided. Authorities are ignorant till date and when I complained to IELTS, it’s like a blind eye turned on me.

This is to make a student rewrite this exam so that they can earn more revenues. No one rectified this and believe me, this exam is crap and anyone can achieve good scores easily if they provided correct info.

With this evidence, if I approach consumer courts, will they block this exam in entire India? How much will it cost to block this exam in India? Corporates MUST stop promoting this exam  and choose different English proficiency tests.

txs.

Hey Yasaswi, I get your frustration with the IELTS General exam—especially if you feel important info isn’t being shared transparently. Your points raise some interesting issues about exam fairness and clarity.

Let me share a few thoughts on this:

About the IELTS Exam & Your Concern

  1. Official Guidelines:
IELTS publishes official preparation materials and scoring criteria (available on their website and in handbooks). While they emphasize coherence, vocabulary range, and grammatical accuracy, there isn’t a strict rule that repeating words automatically reduces marks. Rather, using varied vocabulary helps improve scores under lexical resource criteria.

  2. Writing Skills & Marking:
The examiners look for how well candidates can communicate ideas clearly and use English appropriately. Repetition of words isn’t penalized per se, but it may indicate limited vocabulary, which can affect the score. This is standard in language testing.

  3. Information Transparency:
If the official handbook or website doesn’t explain this well enough, it’s a fair criticism that candidates should get clearer guidance. However, it may be that the ‘secret’ you mention is just a misunderstanding of how language proficiency is assessed.

About Taking Legal Action / Consumer Court

  • Blocking an Exam: It’s highly unlikely any court will block IELTS in India because it’s an internationally recognized standardized test with established protocols.

  • Consumer Court: You can file a complaint if you think you were misled or not given proper info. But proving intentional deception or unfair business practices is tough.

  • Cost & Outcome: Legal processes can be expensive and time-consuming with no guaranteed success.

Practical Alternatives & Suggestions

  • Encourage more transparency from exam bodies.

  • Promote alternative English proficiency tests like TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo.

  • Share verified study materials and coaching tips openly to help students prepare better.
