How to take criticism effectively

others 438 views 5 replies

Rather than trying to avoid criticism, expert performers welcome it. They seek out coaches and advisers who can give them constructive, sometimes even painful feedback. They then use this feedback as a guide for steady improvement.

Here are some steps you can take to handle criticism effectively:

1. Acknowledge Your Error - Acknowledging a mistake is not the same as acknowledging that you are an inferior person/a failure. If you believe the criticism is accurate, take full responsibility. Don't blame something or someone else and don't make excuses. If appropriate, offer a diplomatic apology: "I'm sorry that my actions led to that result. It certainly was not my intention." Again, if appropriate, ask for suggestions on how you can improve your performance the next time.

2. Take Corrective Action - After you've heard the other person out completely, and listened to any suggestions for improvement, state/communicate your eagerness to improve in the future. If appropriate, describe any actions you will take at his time to counterbalance your previous error.

3. Acknowledge the other person's motive - Thank the other person for the feedback and make sure to state how valuable you consider it. This demonstrates your ability to use criticism as a way to improve – an essential quality of a leader. In addition, let the other person know that you are open to receiving his or her feedback in the future.

Even when you don't care for the style in which criticism is presented, be thankful that the other person is willing to give you feedback, and along with it, an opportunity to improve.

Dear sir,

Good article by positive side. I agree with you that, we should take positively everything. and I also understand your points how to see/take criticim  in our life so we can utilise Negative thing into positive thing in language of Management , you are Expaining about to transfer Weakness into thr strength.

However in life we are also facing some other problem like If we successed or doing good work thing people are also doing criticim at that time. Generally that time we are expecting appreciations and motivation from others. Many times I feels from near ones also for doing this kind of things. I know generally society is doing this thing very naturally. If we are failure then they criticim as we can't doing anything , that I can take it as positive but how to take positive then all are doing criticim our self, work. specially when good people doing this.!

Nice article sir...........

Criticisms are good things. They help us look at ourselves, to check

and improve. There are situations where you feel that nothing

you say or do seems right, where there is constant criticism.

How do we satisfy people at that time? We must first be

satisfied with ourselves before we can satisfy others. If we do

not have the power to quickly change the negative attitude of

others, we must atleast start with ourselves.

Change our attitude towards the one who is constantly criticizing.

Adopt more positive approach. Positive thoughts, words and actions

will eventually bring positive results. Continue acting in this Godly

manner. Atleast God will be pleased with you..........

Thanks very much friends for taking note of this post and sharing your useful comments.

Really useful sharing Ankur Sir....................yes

One should never aoid criticism .......as to be criticised shows that                        somehow our work is being recognised and observed and there                    is scope of improvement............in  this manner only one can                        convert his criticism into a positive way..........

Correct me if i am wrong.............smiley

Great sharing sir. Its really useful. It is really important to take criticism in an appropriate manner and taking appropriate action for our betterment. Whats more important is being thankful to the person for that criticism which helped us in improving ourselves.
