study lots and lots
  Hi Sanjay

First of all cover each & every topic.Dont look at statistics of the types of questions asked.Anything can be asked!
Secondly , make it a habbit to read the bare Act side by side with ur main course book. U might get bored early on , but believe me , u will gradually develop interest in the subject.Prepare notes in such a way that u could crevise all topics in just a half day(b4 the exams).Practice all questions many times.Dont expect that u will be able to do a practical question by just remembering the provisions!
Revising the course atleast 2 times(preferably in writing) is a must. But dont make any extra special efforts to remember the sections & clauses coz u will lose more marks if u write the wrong section rather than just leaving it.
Read all cases that have been asked in the exams, even the older ones coz they are repeated again & again!
Lastly get hold of the latest cases supplement issud by the institute & learn it thoroughly & pay special attention on the amendments.
i hope these tips would proove useful to u.

Best Of Luck

hi sanjay,

1. make a list of topics that you need to cover namely:
    a. Basic concepts
    b. Residential status
    c. Salary Income
    d. Income from HP
    e. Income from bus n prof
    f. capital gains
    g. other sources
   h. clubbing
   i carry forward set off
  j assessment procedure
Looked at it this way - Direct taxes has only 10 broad topics
Make sure you cover all the topics
Always refer to bare act along with the regular text books.
do not try to remember case laws.
make notes and try to break a topic into easier pieces.
understand the arrangement of section - e.g salary sec 15 to 17, HP -24 to 27, BP -28 to 45, Cap gains 45 to 54 and so on. This will help you in understanding the structure of income tax and make it easier to remember sections.
and above all
pray to god ;)
