How to determine an assessee's it ward?

I want to know the procedure of determining ones correct Ward/Circle. I am not asking of that procedure in which one gives his PAN No. and his ward/ circle is displayed on incometax India website. Rather I want to know if someone is filing his IT return for the first time how he should approach determining his ward/circle?

Dear Saurav,

Assessee's ward is decided according to the assessee. Company's ward decided by their first alphabet, Salaried class ward is determined by their employer's name/category, business class by their address.

Now, for this books have been written e.g. Book by Sandeep Garg on Jurisdiction. You can also enquire from Income Tax Help Desk.

when you file income tax return (online) there is a section in general sheet in which ward/circle is asked. Dont fill that section it will automatically generate after the filing return... and its true...it is because when you applied for PAN you mentioned address of the assessee according to that your ward is automatically come in return...try it...but remeber dont fil ward/circlr section....

Hai! Just log in to the e filing a/c and just click know jurisdiction. You will know the ward

@ siddharth......what I am interpreting of your explanation is that if we efile our return leaving the ward/circle field blank, the same is automatically generated and reflected in the ITR V...........I didnt know that, thanx for this info...............But the thing is a bit different. I am suppose to efile a return of a client and its not for the first time actually. We have been filing his return giving a particular ward/circle since last 10 yrs. But few days back  while representing him in a tax hearing the ITO mentioned that its the wrong ward/circle under which we are filing the return. So thats why I wanted to know the procedure.

Now I tried the link of 'know jurisdiction' given on efiling website but there also they are showing the same ward/circle under which we file the return every year. So I doubt if i follow the procedure u mentioned it will reflect the same ward/circle.

I read somewhere that ward/circle is determined on the basis of income. So I am looking for that procedure and its not even given in the ready reckoner.

But nevertheless thnx for the info u gave. It is also something worth knowing.

sunilji, thnx for your opinion but I dont think for this thing I will buy a book.

Dear Sourav,

The Procedure for knowing your Ward/Circle has been very simplified by the Introduction of this feature in the NSDL Website. Just go to the NSDL Website and fill out a New PAN application form.

https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/index.html

This link will take you to fill up the PAN Application -FORM 49A. Just Click on "Dont know AO Details" -Don`t know AO details?

For Non International Taxation AO details

Then click on the initials of the city in which the assessee belongs to. For example if I live in Mangalore, then i would click "M"

Then click on you city. It displays an entire list of Wards/Circles in your City. In Mangalore if an assessee is having an income of more than 5 lakhs, then his Jurisdiction is DCIT Circle 1- Mangalore. And if the assessees house is situated in 1st Municipal Ward ( Ward No: Usually the first numeral in your Door No.), then his Jurisdiction would be ITO Ward 1(2)

"All persons (other than salary cases) carrying on business or profession or residing in old Municipal Ward No.1, 2, 3, 4 and 14 of Mangalore City Municipal Corporation and the area covered from Pumpwell upto Kannur including Padil and Bajaal in Mangalore Taluk."

Please read through this section caefully and know your correct Jurisdiction.

Cheers,

  Viggi

Thnx vignesh,

This was what I was looking for and my query is now solved.
