Foreign citizen as directors

Dear Experts

Are foreign citizens who are directors in the Board of an indian company required to obtain PAN in India as a default rule?

Please advise.

There is no "default rule" that states merely being a director makes a PAN mandatory. However, because a director in an Indian company will almost invariably engage in activities that require tax reporting—such as receiving payments, signing company documents, or managing corporate accounts—obtaining a PAN is practically essential. Failing to obtain one would severely restrict the director's ability to receive remuneration or perform their statutory duties on behalf of the company.
