Hi, and great question — one that many NRI return filers encounter!
✅ Why Is the EI (Exempt Income) Schedule Disabled?
The EI (Exempt Income) schedule in the ITR form becomes enabled based on the data you enter in relevant parts of the return. If it's disabled, here’s why that might be happening:
🔍 Possible Reasons & Solutions:
1. No Exempt Income Detected in Other Sections
If you haven’t declared any income (e.g., dividends, exempt interest, PPF, LTCG exempt under 10(38), etc.) in the relevant heads, the portal auto-disables the EI schedule.
✅ Solution:
Go to:
-
Schedule OS (Other Sources) – enter any exempt interest (e.g., NRE interest)
-
Schedule CG – if any LTCG under section 10(38) or similar exempt gains
Once you enter any exempt income, the EI schedule will auto-enable.
2. NRI Filing – Only Foreign Income / No Indian Exempt Income
If you’re filing as an NRI with only foreign income, and no Indian exempt income (like NRE interest, exempt dividends, or agricultural income), then the system doesn’t activate the EI schedule — this is not a glitch, but intended behavior.
✅ What You Can Do:
If you do have exempt NRE interest, declare it under:
Once done, EI schedule will become active.
3. Technical Glitch (Rare but Possible)
If you have entered exempt income but EI schedule still doesn't activate, it could be a glitch.
✅ Fixes:
-
Log out & clear browser cache, re-login
-
Try on desktop version of utility (if using online version)
-
Switch to offline ITR utility (Excel/Java) – EI can be manually filled there
-
Still stuck? Raise a grievance on the e-filing portal (grievance section)
✅ Final Suggestion:
If you have NRE interest or other exempt income as an NRI, always declare it properly under "Exempt income" to avoid future query — even though tax isn’t applicable.
