This is a common error when the Date of Birth (DOB) in the XML file of your ITR does not match the DOB linked with the PAN database. Since this mismatch affects validation, the return gets rejected.
What you can do:
-
Check PAN database for correct DOB
Visit the Income Tax e-Filing site and verify the PAN details, especially the DOB.
-
Ensure DOB in ITR XML matches exactly
The DOB you fill in the ITR form or XML must be exactly the same as per PAN records — format, spelling, and date.
-
Correct the DOB in your ITR form or XML
-
If you filled wrong DOB in the ITR, update it and re-generate the XML.
-
If you filled correctly but still mismatch occurs, download PAN details and cross-check.
-
If PAN database itself is incorrect
-
Since you raised a grievance on the e-Filing portal
-
Keep following up on that grievance. Sometimes it takes a few weeks for rectification.
-
Meanwhile, recheck and file the ITR with corrected DOB if possible.
-
If refund is stuck due to this issue
Important:
-
The DOB format must be DD/MM/YYYY exactly as in PAN.
-
Even a small difference (like 1 day or month) causes mismatch.
-
If you are filing through a tax consultant or software, ensure the input matches PAN details.
