AO codes stand for "Assessing Officer" codes which are used by the Income Tax Department to identify the specific officer responsible for assessing a particular taxpayer's tax return. PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a unique identification number assigned to individuals and businesses by the Income Tax Department to keep track of their tax-related transactions. TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is a unique identification number assigned to individuals and businesses who are responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source. Both PAN and TAN are required to be quoted on various tax-related forms and returns.
