I am a central Govt employee. The house we were staying belonged to my mother in law and I was producing rent receipt from her for income tax exemption. Last Decenmber she has passed away and my wife has inherrited the house. My wife is an income tax assessee and not caliming house rent exemption. Is it legal for me to pay house rent to my wife and produce the receipt for incometax exemption? Pl. advice

The relationship between a husband and wife is not commercial in nature and therefore the rent paid to spouse is not considered by the income tax authorities.
No you cannot pay rent to your wife as income tax treats husband and wife as living together. Hence even if you pay rent to your wife, it will be clubbed in your hands only.
