I would like to know if both Retained Earnings and General Reserves are one and the same.

There is no major difference between General Reserve and Retained Earnings.

Actually general reserve is a part of the total retained earnings. There are also other components of Retained earnings such as: Capital reserve, CRR, P/L, Security Premium.
