Demand outstanding tax-need help!

I was expecting a tax refund of 15000 for the FY 2011-12 and this wk I have received a mail from income tax stating that this amount has been adjusted against the demand outstanding for the AY 2008-09 .

Firstly i was shocked and irritated that the Tax department is waiting for so many yrs to send us the notofication instead of doing it in 2009 and asking us to rectify it immediatly.(good way to suck common mans money for government ).

But my question is 2007(jan -July ) i was employed with one company and 2007-2008(Aug -Mar) i was employed with another company.

I can t recall if i have done the tax filing for FY 2007-08 but i am sure my combined income of both the jobs were still low and i was not eligible to pay any tax.

What do i do ? if i have not filed the Tax for 2007-08 but if my company has deducted the TDS will i still be hold responsible to pay tax?

I am checking with my company for the TDS details for that yr, but they are not reverting very positively as its almost 6-7 yrs back and they are saying they can not find details.

the outstanding demand is for 64900:-(

first check your income tax intimation u/s 143 (1) and check what income tax people did actually. and also check your old record of ITR's corelate the same.

if you are correct and there is not demand against as per you than file a ractification u/s 154 (2)

this is also a possibilities that there is some error in Tax Credit in your PAN account.

Hey thanks for your revert!

In the tax intimation u/s 143 (1) it just says ADJUSTMENT OF REFUND AGAINST DEMAND OUTSTANDING for 2008-09 15,370(this was suppose to be the refund amt)

No wher it says how much was actual outstanding and how much is pending etc .

I did go through incometax.org .There it just shows the total outstanding amt as 64900 ,Is there any way i get to know the break up 64900 ?

Also currently i am outside India so i will not be able to do this immediatly ,Hope this is fine
