Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies the eligibility for claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA). Generally, you can claim HRA if you are paying rent and not living in your own property. It's important to note that HRA is tax-exempt, not taxable, and the exemption amount can sometimes exceed the income tax payable. The relevant section for this is Sec 10(13A) RULE 2A.
Its not taxable but tax exempt. I asked a question today if IT must be reduced by the HRA Exemption and it is still in moderation. HRA exempt is bigger than normal Income tax payable sometimes.
