Claiming hra in itr-1

ITR 1412 views 4 replies

Hi,

My prev employer has not given me tax exemption for HRA. So can I claim it now in my ITR? If yes, what all docs will be required to submit to IT dept?

Thanks,
Kunal

You can claim it. No documents required while filing and submitting return. If selected for scrutiny ou should be ready with documentarty evidence in support of your HRA Claim.

Thanks man.
I was staying in my NRI cousin's accomodation. So we did not make Rental agreement. I was transferring rent online and do have rent receipts. Is Rental Agrrement also required, if selected for scrutiny?

If no rental agreement is there. You can use money transfer document and rent receipt as evidence. It will not be an issue.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that HRA shoudl be a part of your salary structure and should be reflected in your salary slip for you to claim HRA deduction.

Minimum of the following three will be available as HRA Exemption:

  1. Actual house rent allowance received from your employer
  2. Actual house rent paid by you minus 10% of your basic salary
  3. 50% of your basic salary if you live in a metro or 40% of your basic salary if you live in a non-metro
