Changing from ri to nri status

I had applied for and got a PAN card for my daughter while she was still a student and a resident Indian. She is now working abroad and invests as an NRI. So far she has never filed returns since she had not much of an income in India. Since she has investments that remain in debt funds for some period of time, TDS at around 30% is deducted and hence I wish that she should file her returns to reclaim the TDS.

When I try to register her on the IT website, I get a message saying "PAN is not found in DGIT database" if I select the NRI ststus checkbox. How can I resolve this issue? Does she need to have her status changed in the PAN database? How do we go about doing it?

So far as my knowledge goes, PAN is a unique no alloted to a person regardless of his/her being NRI or resident. Only while filling the return one has to mention his/her status as NRI or resident.

So if NRI status was not claimed at the time of issuing the PAN card, there is no problem of claiming NRI status while filing the ITR?

Yes you are right.
