Can we charge interest to society for excess money collected?

Hello,

Last year society had collected about 9000Rs extra (as property tax) from us due to their miscalculations.

That time we suspected the miscalculation, but we still paid the amount and also sent letter to society to look in to the calculations again. Orally the secretary kept insisting that figures in bill are correctly calculated.

After about 9 months society accepted the mistake and credited Rs.9000 in bill.

My question is that can I ask society to pay us interest? Because when we fail to pay bill on time, the society charges us interest at 18% p.a.

Please inform / guide.

Thank you.
