Articleship in three different firms

243 views 1 replies
Guys, I have already served articleship in two firms with a good amount of exposure in audits. Now only 50 days left and I can't complete remaining days in this firm due to medical reasons. I'm a final student. If I serve articleship in three different firms, will interviewer reject my CV before calling me for the interview after completion of CA?

The concerns you are facing regarding your articleship are common among CA students, especially when health or personal circumstances arise. Here is a breakdown of the implications and the regulatory path for your situation.

1. Will Interviewers Reject Your CV?

Generally, no, an interviewer will not automatically reject your CV simply because you have served articleship in three different firms.

  • Content Over Structure: Recruiters are primarily interested in the quality of the exposure you gained rather than the number of firms you served in. If you can clearly articulate what you learned—such as specific audit processes, tax filings, or compliance work—during your time at each firm, that experience remains valuable.

  • The "Why" Matters: If asked in an interview, be honest and professional about your reasons for moving (e.g., medical reasons, professional growth, or relocation). Focusing on the transition as a way to gain "diversified exposure" is often viewed more positively than focusing on the difficulties of the previous firms.

  • Performance is Key: Once you qualify, your performance in the CA Final exams and your technical knowledge during the interview carry significantly more weight than the number of articleship transfers on your record.

2. Regulatory Compliance

Since you are a CA Final student with only 50 days remaining, it is critical to ensure you complete your remaining tenure in full compliance with ICAI regulations to avoid issues with your membership registration later.

  • Termination Rules: In the second and third years of articleship, transfers are restricted and typically require valid, documented grounds (like medical issues). Since you have a genuine medical reason, ensure you have the necessary documentation (e.g., medical certificates) to support your transfer.

  • Prior Permission: Unlike the first year, transfers in the second and third years often require prior permission from the ICAI. Do not simply leave your current firm; ensure you follow the formal procedure of submitting Form 109 and obtaining the necessary approvals to avoid an "excess leave" or "unauthorized break" scenario.

  • Completing the Tenure: You must serve the full, prescribed period of articleship. If you are short by 50 days, you must ensure these days are properly credited to your record through a new principal/firm so that your final certificate of service is issued for the full duration.

Recommendations

  1. Prioritize Documentation: Secure a medical certificate from a recognized hospital or doctor. This is your primary "pass" for a mid-tenure transfer.

  2. Formalize the Transfer: Coordinate with your current principal to sign off on your Form 109. If there is a dispute, attempt to resolve it amicably, as your principal’s signature and recommendation are vital for a smooth transition.

  3. Use Your Remaining Time: Use the final 50 days to solidify your practical knowledge in a specific area, as this will be your "talking point" in interviews.

  4. Check with ICAI: Before joining a new firm, verify your status on the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) to ensure your previous two firms are accurately reflected and that there are no pending discrepancies.

Summary: Having articleship experience in three different firms is not a career-ending factor; recruiters prioritize your technical skills and the quality of your exposure. Ensure you obtain formal ICAI approval for your transfer due to medical reasons to keep your records clean, and focus on effectively summarizing your diverse experience during future job interviews.
