Articleship in Big Firms for 9 Months

Hi everyone ,

I am looking for your suggestions for my present scenario, describes as follows :-

First of all, inspite of trying very hard, I couldn't find any direct links/contacts/approach to the Big firms (not even Top 10)

My Final attempt falls on Nov-2011. I have on records 8 months of pending articleship period, but I unfortunately i have not been exposed to good standards of work (which fetches better pay package in future) till now. I have been working with a small firm with a very limited exposure. The work I have done is next to nothing.

I am scared of the fact that I wont have get a good job (i.e which pays atleast 60k p.m. initially or 7-8 Lac p.a.) because I dont have good articleship experience.

Now, when I have applied in Big firms, nobody is interested to look at me, because my articleship period left is too less. There is no way that I can assure them that I would continue with them even after my articleship gets over, and even after I complete CA, because practically I wont have any other option.

But I have failed to convince them till now .

Please suggest what to do ??

Srihari,

First of in the Big 4 also u won get more than 6 L PA at max after clearing CA exams. and it is highly unlikely that they would take you considering ur limited period available and also ur exam attempt falling right after that. I would advise you to concentrate on the exams and clear it in the first attempt and then wondering abt getting a good job. Do complete task which are under your control and then worry abt tasks under other's control. All the best for ur exams.

Regards

If you get articleship in a big firm, get desired exposure and take 3-4 attempts to clear your exams, will it be better or, if you get alright (or negligible) exposure and clear your exams in one go?

I've been through this dillema for quite sometime and asked a numerous people, some CAs too... They said in campus, etc.. the interviewer asks stuffs mainly from course, then some wordly financial affairs, at max.. Maybe, some interviewer might ask you about your articleship, but when you have marks, they can safely assume you do have the caliber to understand things easily and suit their needs.

Most organisations prefer rank holders, least attempt takers, more marks obtainers. I was cited example of few dummy cases, who were good in studies, never did articleship, yet got good jobs. That's how it is.. Well, of course it is sampling and mere opinion. You can hear and find different practises.

Not everybody can get good articleship exposure, due to locational reasons and other factors.

You can be a CA first, then get the required exposure, maybe at a lower remuneration than your expectation, but you can later reach there.. But, if you take more attempts think about the opportunity cost you are loosing.

Lets assume I clear CA in first attempt , then what say ??
Then, if I get articleship in a Big Firms (not necessarily Big 4s, may be even amongst top 10), then what salary is expected after becoming CA ?

Ur articleship matters a lot in placement as well as at the time of ur studying for final exams. It gives u an insight how the world really works. What we study in books may not be useful in real world, Also working in good firm saves u the time u would be spending learning after qualifying which will be irritating when u will see that people junior to you know more than you(in case u get into a good firm).

But if u dont want to get into practise then it doesnt matter where you do ur articleship.I would advise u to atleast search for a good local firm which atleast gives u exposure in some matters

Do not bother much about what you have learnt or not..If you are more interested in employment, its better you equip yourself with good Accounting Packages and core accounting..That will help you a lot iN MNC's.. Moreover i would suggest you to concentrate more on your exams and clear it in less attempts. GOOD LUCK

If you can handle the pressure of big firms, plus you think you can clear exams in one go.. Sure, it will be a benefit..

A lot of factors play role in in your first pay, like market conditions, how you present before interviewer, your knowledge (in addition to CA course), etc..

A general suggestion in life, don't keep any expectations from life, you'll be happy on whatever you get, and you won't be sad on whatever you get.. ;)

BTW, I am not saying that articleship is utter waste of time.. It does help a lot in life, like adapting in office culture, office politics, etc.. :)

I've improved a lot as a social being during articleship...

Considering you got less time left, plus not many firms would be interested for a short term trainee, you don't have much options, so utilise your current resources and try to give max. output.

If you wanna learn, join some firm as a paid staff, after articleship or, by taking dummy/ make arrangements with current Principal.

You can consult recently passed CA seniors, if possible. They can guide you best at this point of your life and your confusion.

My take - focus on your studies. I've suffered a lot in this confusion.
