What are the working hours in SNB as well as working days? For articleship

For Chartered Accountant (CA) articleship training, the working hours and conditions are governed by the ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) regulations.

Official ICAI Guidelines

  • Standard Weekly Hours: Articled assistants are required to work 35 hours per week, excluding the lunch break.

  • Office Timing Windows:

    • The Principal's office hours should generally not start before 9:00 AM or end after 7:00 PM.

    • An articled assistant's normal working hours should not start after 11:00 AM or end before 5:00 PM.

  • Exceptional Circumstances: In situations where the workload requires it, an assistant may be asked to work beyond the 35-hour limit, but the total time worked must not exceed 45 hours per week.

  • Compensatory Leave: If you are required to work more than 35 hours in a week, you are entitled to compensatory leave calculated based on the extra hours worked.

  • Working Days: While the regulations focus on total hours (35 per week), the distribution of these hours across the week is at the discretion of the Principal. Many firms operate on a 5-day or 6-day work week depending on their specific practice culture.

Important Notes

  • Regulatory Compliance: These rules are mandatory. If a firm deviates significantly from these (e.g., forcing regular 60+ hour work weeks), it may be considered a violation of ICAI training standards.

  • Firm Culture: While the official rules exist, the actual culture varies significantly between firms. "Big 4" or larger firms often have more intense, project-based schedules, whereas mid-sized or small firms may offer more predictable but varied hours. It is common to find firms working 6 days a week, though you should verify their specific policy before joining.

  • Education: During these working hours, you are not permitted to attend regular college classes or other educational institutions without prior permission from the ICAI (via Form 112).

Summary: Under ICAI rules, articleship is limited to 35 hours per week (up to 45 hours in extreme circumstances) within the window of 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. You are entitled to compensatory leave for any hours exceeding 35 per week. Note that actual firm culture can vary, so it is helpful to clarify expectations during your interview.
