SEBI is the regulator for the Securities Market in India. It was formed officially by the Government of India in 1992 with SEBI Act 1992 being passed by the Indian Parliament. Chaired by C B Bhave, SEBI is headquartered in the popular business district of Bandra-Kurla complex in Mumbai, and has Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western regional offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Before 1992, the three principal acts governing securities market were

(a) The capital Issues control Act, 1947

>>> Which restricts issuers access to the securities market & controlled the prices of issues 

 (b) The companies Act, 1956

>>> which sets out the code of conduct for the corporate sector in relation to issue, allotment & transfer of securites, & disclosure to be made in public issue

(c) The securites Contracts Regulation act, 1956

>>> which provides for regulationof transactions in securities through control over stock exchanges.
