My wife's name in Aadhaar is "Vimala S" and in PAN database "Vimala Santhanam." I got the message "Aadhaar PAN linking request is not completed due to technical issue. Please resubmit the request through Link Aadhaar."
The important aspect is that even about the "technical issue" there is no information on what is wrong and we have to rely on our own assumptions, by eliminating other possibilities in respect of gender and DOB.
1. What is the solution in my wife's case?
2. Can a few of the CAs take up this issue through ICAI, since I gather that this "mismatch" is a problem haunting a substantial number of PAN holders? I am afraid there would be millions like this.

Quick Summary
1. Either update name in Aadhar as recorded in PAN database or other way round, and then link Aadhar.
2. Such mismatches are to be rectified by assessee himself for future consistent database.

I think it's important to start using logic and reasoning to quickly resolve such issues so the tax payer does not have to waste time on fulfilling unnecessary formalities. In this case, it is clear that the person is the same, so why not allow the linking? In a country like India, issues with name is always bound to happen as there is always confusion between first name, second name and third name. Some states have surnames and some don't. Some use initials, some don't. So on and so forth.
So either the govt has to start using logic and reasoning or they need to first standardize the entry of names in forms.

Changing name in aadhar would be easier so I am of the opinion that you should update her aadhar card asap

You can correct your Aadhaar details on UIDAI website (https://uidai.gov.in/my-aadhaar/update-aadhaar.html).

But I got a surprise. I resubmitted the request without any change from what I stated earlier and linking was completed. What I feel is that once the request is cleared by IT, UIDAI generally approves linking.
