if my parents are on regular medicines like (bp diabetes etc) based on doctors prescripttion can i claim the amount in 80d medical expenditure.

Yes, for any premium paid for mediclaim insurance....and upto Rs. 5,000/- for medical checkup...
expenses incurred on medical treatment cannot be claimed under section 80D unless they are very senior citizen i.e. 80 or more age
note: from a.y. 2019-20, senior citizen can also claim medical expenses under 80d up to 50000
