For individuals, the bill has proposed to continue with exempt-exempt-exempt (EEE) method of taxation on investments up to Rs 3 lakh in a fiscal year in provident fund, pension fund and pure life insurance products.
Under EEE, tax will not be levied during all the three stages — when investment is made, interest earned and when the money is withdrawn.
NSC is ETE...
For every stage of investment,( investing, accumulation, withdrawal/maturity) you can be taxed or exempted from tax and alphabet T/E are assigned to every stage. E is used when you are exempted from tax whereas T is used when you are taxed. Let’s take an example of investment in PPF :
-
You save tax while investing (under section 80C), so E for investing stage,
-
Interest is tax free during the PPF tenure of 15 years, so E for accumulation stage.
-
After 15 years your investment amount and interest is tax free, so E for Maturity stage.
-
Putting all this together you get that investment in PPF is EEE.
So the various valid combinations of taxed and exemptions are EEE, TEE, ETE, EET, TET, TTE
